01 · Overview
Jyotish Sarathi is Vedic astrology software shipping on Android, macOS and Windows. It generates kundali and divisional charts, runs dasha and transit calculations, produces faladesh readings, and carries a full panchanga calendar - all computed on the device rather than on a server.
The product's own line is that it is the Kundali app "that respects the classical math". That is the positioning, and it drives almost every decision in the build: accuracy first, with the user in control of which method the software uses.
02 · Problem
Jyotish is consulted seriously by a very large number of people across Nepal and India, and the software serving them tends to fall short in one of two directions.
- Generic astrology apps use the wrong calculation system and the wrong calendar entirely.
- Locally accurate tools are often desktop-era, dense and hard to read.
- Practitioners disagree on method - imposing a single one makes the output useless to half the audience.
- Charts are consulted in places with poor connectivity, so a server round trip is a real failure mode.
- Most tools are English-only, which excludes much of the actual readership.
03 · Concept
Treat the calculation engine as the product and let the user choose the method. Rather than picking one tradition, the software ships both Surya Siddhanta (classical) and Drik Siddhanta (observational), plus 11+ ayanamsha options including Lahiri and Raman.
Everything then runs offline against a bundled 500+ year ephemeris covering 1768 to 2293 AD, so a chart generated on a hilltop with no signal is the same chart generated in an office.
04 · What it does
-
Kundali and charts
Lagna, Navamsha and divisional charts D1 to D60, generated for any birthplace worldwide, in North or South Indian chart style. Several kundalis can be open at once, and any chart can be read full screen.
-
Chart analysis
Ashtakavarga, Shadbala planetary strength and planetary relations.
-
Dasha and transit
Vimshottari and Yogini dasha, gochar transit analysis, and kundali matching.
-
Faladesh
Written readings including yoga faladesh across 50+ major yogas, generated from the chart rather than authored per user.
-
Advanced KP astrology
Krishnamurti Paddhati calculations for practitioners who work in that system.
-
Cheena and printed reports
A cheena export as PDF or image, carrying Vimshottari, Tribhagi and Yogini dasha, D1 to D60 charts and the full yoga list - with control over colours and which sections print.
-
Panchanga and patro
Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana, auspicious timings and festivals, a calendar with Rahukaal, chandra masa by both the Amanta and Purnimanta methods, and a Vikram Sambat to Gregorian date converter.
-
Eight languages
English, Nepali, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Odia, Bengali and Telugu.
-
Offline, with optional cloud sync
Everything computes on-device; a paid tier syncs a library of 10,000+ kundalis across devices, along with the notes attached to each chart.
05 · Technology
- Flutter / Dart - one codebase across Android, macOS and Windows.
- On-device calculation engine - sidereal computation with no server round trip.
- 500+ year ephemeris - 1768 to 2293 AD, bundled with the app.
- Dual siddhanta - Surya and Drik, with 11+ ayanamsha options.
- Cloud sync - optional, for a saved kundali library across devices.
06 · My contribution
I worked on the application side of the product at Sarathi Service: screen structure and navigation, integrating the calculation engine into the interface, the state and caching behind saved charts, and preparing release builds across platforms.
A large share of that is presentation logic rather than feature code - deciding how much of a dense traditional chart to show at once, and what to reveal only when asked for.

08 · Challenges and decisions
Accuracy is not negotiable
Users check this output against a practitioner. A subtly wrong calculation destroys trust permanently, so the engine was treated as fixed and correct and every product decision was made around it rather than through it.
Density versus clarity
A traditional chart carries a great deal of simultaneous information, and practitioners expect all of it. Newcomers need almost none of it at first. The interface is layered: a readable view by default, full detail one tap away, nothing removed.
Eight scripts, one layout
Supporting Devanagari alongside Gujarati, Odia, Bengali and Telugu means font fallback, line breaking and vertical rhythm all differ per language, and a layout that works in English can break in Telugu. Fonts are bundled and layouts tested per language rather than trusting platform defaults.
Calendar conversion as infrastructure
Vikram Sambat does not map cleanly onto Gregorian dates, and getting it wrong shifts every panchanga value on the screen. Conversion is handled in one place and treated as core infrastructure, not a formatting detail.
09 · Status
Live and actively developed, with 40K+ downloads and 150+ features across kundali, dasha, panchanga, muhurat, matching and reports. Free forever on a single device with the full calculation engine; paid tiers add multi-device sync, faladesh and advanced KP astrology.
